Legend has it that the love for horses skips every other generation. In Debbie Erickson’s case, that legend was taken to the extreme. As far back as she can recall, her grandfather had horses and she possessed a deep love for them herself even as a small child. The problem was that her father was deathly allergic to them. So Debbie and her dad had to make a deal – in order for her to have her own horses, she had to take 100 percent responsibility for them, despite being just nine years old. Debbie never thought twice. She made the deal, and more than 35 years later, her love affair with horses has never waned.

“Having horses instilled a lot of responsibility in me early in life,” Debbie says, adding that they require her to get up at 5:00 a.m. every morning. “That’s okay, though. If you put more than average into life, you get more than average in return.”

A Competitive Spirit

Debbie began riding competitively in her teens and is still doing it today. She competes mostly in Alaska, but she’s also participated in equestrian events all over the country. She views riding as the ultimate test of her physical and mental strength. One such example came when Debbie was competing in a jumping competition aboard a horse she called “a big scaredy-cat.”

“I get a lot of joy out of seeing the horses develop,” Debbie says. “On that day, the jumps were pretty scary looking and I wasn’t sure my horse would make it. But he went out there and jumped his little heart out. We didn’t win the class but I’ll never forget that day.” That anecdote sums up Debbie’s philosophy perfectly. It’s not about the trophy, but about achieving more than she might have initially thought possible.
